Rip It Up

Rip It Up

Alaska Lyrics

Panic

They come down like hell’s been waiting. Say your prayers and down the spiral we go. Don’t say now that we weren’t warned. No, they come crashing with a burning impulse. Halos now lying broken. Sorrows, the tears that drown this world. What I love has fallen under, the threat that we’ve all come to fear. I am defeated.

Heavy Rain

When it rains it pours down. So unforgiving. Just let it all come crashing on me. Your flooding tears they run straight down my hands. There is no stopping now. You’ve got me paralysed. Come, tragedy. Come sing it louder for me. Will it always be like this? The perfect storm. Swirling from your mouth. Sky sirens calling out. Silver needles fall with a temper. There is no going back. I feel the ground start to shift before my feet. To my epiphany. Cold stares dripping from the ceiling. Could have sworn I caved in but it’s beating… this tired heart keeps on beating. We always said this was getting worse. And never did it ever end for us. These arms wrap around to gather in what’s left. I’ve written this final chapter. Words bleeding down the fucking page. I wrote this all about you.

Cry Wolf

Elude me. Black clouds come and follow me. Because it’s never worth the time. Where the fuck do you hide? Through the dead of winter. Subjected to the half light. There’s only so much that I can do. Two words are all I can give to you. Eyes close as the beat in my chest will slow. Am I cold dead? Am I just waiting to let it go? Snow drifts as I fade away.

11:11

Your face disappearing. Why do I ever let you in? The hands don’t move anymore. Cold wind keeps on sweeping in. To think that we could sustain forever. We wonder how we are at times. The blue bleeds into the black. And I can’t escape it. The clocks don’t work now. They don’t tell me too much anyway. We knew it had to be like this. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so alone. Just so you know I always suffer thinking that when my lungs collapse I can’t help but know you won’t be here. There’s nothing worse. Just so you know we always suffer. We can’t help but know you won’t be here. And we hope you know that when we suffer, we can’t help but not want you here.

In circles above

Bury all our sins. Throw away. If you can’t leave, then I won’t stay. Hollow season. My lungs just carry burdens. Seems now you’re all that I breathe. Hollow season. Sun down, hearts drown. Weave in and out of me, wrap around my neck so tightly. Suffocating, overtaking. But they just sit and watch. Head up, keep on walking on. Bury all our sins. Throw away. If you can’t leave, then it will tear this place apart. Blue devil on my shoulder. Keep saying it’s spreading over. Hollow season. Know now, we’re sifting ashes. The violet grows but time heals nothing. My lungs just carry burdens. Some never, get away. Hollow season. Dusk approaches. We’re on our way out. So now they follow. Round again. The vultures know too well.

Surfacing

We know how events evolve. Look at how this place reminds us. Needless to say, so I bury it. Myself in it. But they always find a way back up. There are some things that I keep inside. So you don’t ever have to see. That when the days drain of colour and sleeping gets harder, I still see you smiling back at me. Swallowing knife by knife. Each one getting sharper. The taste more familiar. The sun starts to sink as I feel deep below. Each breath I inhale is the burden I bear. With every passing beat, the seconds count and doubt the longer I am here. We know how events evolve. Endless circles biting harder at every turn. This is the only constant that I know. How further before the claws will take us?

Ultimatum

Crisis in the winter twilight. Another coarse red petal dies. Cold winds sweeping over the pavement. To steal away sweet innocence. If we could retrace our footsteps, then we wouldn’t have to hold our breath. Saying over ‘I’m with you until the end’. With my eyes wide open. I can see this landscape melting away. Hearts tied hanging from above us. The dying cries that no one hears. Past voices getting louder. Something I can’t compete with. Like spiders crawling in, deeper within my mind. Look at all the faces staring across the floor. Is this not enough (for us)? One by one they follow. Crisis in the winter twilight. Another coarse red petal dies. Cold winds sweeping over the pavement. Time stands still thinking about you. Even when we’re getting older, do we feel the earth still turn? Sad songs and heavy crosses. All alone and we’re counting down just hours till we hollow ourselves out. So we roam under the streetlights. Path unknown (all alone). Each name that we’ve ever come to known. This life that I’ve been searching far and wide. To find the heart of chrome through the sands of time. I’ll keep this promise. I’ll keep this promise so you’ll know where to find me.

Article on Alaska

Vultures are from Australia and play a dark brand of hardcore that has some d-beat influence. Despite the reasonable lengths of these songs, they still come off as epic in their formation. It’s perfect for those folks that love the epic sound but aren’t exactly thrilled with 11 minute songs.

The production on this translates the band well. The high gain guitars and pounding drums are very present. The vocals could come down a notch, but the throaty scream carries a great urgency to it that brings some enthusiasm to these dark soundscapes. There’s some great use of higher register guitar work to add that melodic feel, and I suppose this adds to the epic style a bit.

For the most part we’re sticking to faster, upbeat stuff here, similar to Sled (who I reviewed last month). Every now and then the band has a few tricks up their sleeve. The track “11:11” features a driving breakdown that culminates into some melodic singing. It comes out of left field but works well in the context of the song. “Circles Above” follows and shows the band pulling of a completely mid tempo composition that had me thinking of some early Buried Inside or even Modern Life is War. There’s great attention to the dynamics here that make for some interesting moments.

End Of A Year.

We’re winding down to the end of another year, so we would just like to say thank you to everyone who has had anything to do with this band this year: Bought merch, came to a show, put this band on a show, spoke about us, showed us to your friends and anything else.

Hopefully next year we will be a lot less lazy and more proactive and finally get our release out, play more shows and even head interstate.

So thanks once again enjoy your holidays and we’ll see you all again next year.

Vultures.
